Happy (almost) New Year

Happy New Year's Eve to everyone. Jerry is resting comfortably at mom & dad's house and looks way better than he has in days. His spirits are high and his attitude is great- he even has an appetite!

He'll be staying in Iowa until tomorrow mid-day where he will then head back to KC for an appt on Friday at KU Med.

We are working feverishly to get him an appointment at MD Anderson next week (or ASAP if can't be next week). Between Tanya and I, we'll get him in there lickety split! Shoot, if nothing else, the doctor's offices will be so annoyed with our frequent calling, they will jump all over getting him scheduled just so we'll stop calling (our Master Plan is working!).

We have gathered a lot of good information on travel, lodging and Cancer assistance programs that should help us out once he gets down to Texas.

We hope everyone has a safe New Years Eve tonight. Be safe, happy and we'll talk to you in the New Year. :)

  2. Happy New Year, Jerry!

I feel for you, with all the delays. Please DO get a 2nd opinion, especially from a cancer center. They may know of cutting-edge treatments that aren't yet available in KC or Iowa (the gamma knife comes to mind, as it was not yet available in KC when I had my cancer. I didn't get a 2nd but the standard protocol worked for me, fortunately). Said treatments may just reduce the side-effects w/o compromising the beneficial results. Ask about everything you can think of, and then ask the Dr what you didn't think to ask that other patients with your cancer have asked.

If chemo is ultimately recommended for you, ask whether the companies that can tailor chemo for your physiology are worth pursuing. They have some restrictions on the types of treatments and time since treatment when evaluating possible regimens. They will need untreated (or not recently treated) cancer for building their recommended cocktail. One size chemo doesn't fit all, because individuals experience side-effects differently. You'll want the most effective treatment against your cancer with the least side-effects.

Personal energy management and pain management are key to your ability to get through what's ahead (glad to hear you're feeling better after this last hospital stay). Mind that you don't push yourself too hard. Get plenty of rest and eat well.

You're in my prayers, and in those of my church. Hang in there!

  5. Hey! I just learned this afternoon that Tulsa OK has a cancer center. I talked with a man who has been in treatment there for awhile. He was pleased with his care and he said they were very proactive in treatment and treated the 'whole self" including concerns with family support etc. Just a thought...

And of course you are in our thoughts every day. Many big hugs and postivie wishes going your way.

    Love ya

PS...how is Lanie? Give her a scratch for me!
